  • Dr. Scott Bennett

Dr. Scott Bennett leads the science committee of the Great Southern Reef Foundation. The concept of the GSR originated from a paper published by Bennett and colleagues in 2015. This publication laid the foundation for the idea of the GSR.

Scott was was born and raised surfing and diving the reefs of Tasmania and has studied the kelp forest ecosystems of Australia in depth right across the country throughout his career as a marine scientist. Devoted to temperate marine research and the effect of ocean warming on temperate reef species, Bennett was recently awarded the highly prestigious Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Researcher award. Currently based in Tasmania his upcoming research aims to enhance the capacity to detect vulnerable areas of the Great Southern Reef.

  • Dr. Sahira Bell

Sahira is a Co-founder and Director of Science Communication at the Great Southern Reef Foundation, and an active marine ecologist specialising in the design and implementation of two-way research to deliver nature positive outcomes. Sahira begun her career in marine conservation by exploring and studying some of the planets most extraordinary ecosystems, witnessing firsthand the role nature plays in human well-being. After completing her PhD understanding the impacts of climate change and marine heatwaves on kelp forests, she identified the gap in directly connecting science with society to translate systematic concepts into tangible conservation strategies. Since then, her work has been formative in bridging that gap between research and practical conservation efforts, ensuring that complex environmental data informs real world solutions for protecting marine ecosystems.
