White Rock Card Deck
The White Rock Urchin Impact Cards are part of the new White Rock Education Kit, designed for schools, educators, and community groups.
This deck helps students explore one of the key challenges facing the Great Southern Reef: how to manage sea urchin populations to support kelp forest recovery.
Each card presents a real-world impact, benefit, or challenge linked to urchin management. Students use the cards to compare urchin culling, urchin harvesting, or where the two approaches overlap, building skills in critical thinking, discussion, and evidence-based decision-making.
The deck supports a wide range of classroom activities, from quick group discussions to full class debates and project work.
What’s included
Impact cards exploring ecological, economic, social, and management considerations
Scenario cards with real-world challenges to apply learning
Category cards to help sort and compare ideas
Wild cards that encourage creativity and problem-solving
How they’re used
Sort and compare different urchin management strategies
Support classroom debates and role-play activities
Prompt discussion, reflection, and written responses
Extend learning from the White Rock documentary
Designed for
Upper primary and secondary classrooms
Science, Geography, Sustainability, and Civics units
Teacher-led lessons or student-directed learning
These cards turn White Rock from a film into a hands-on learning experience, helping students understand that there’s no single solution and that managing reefs means balancing ecology, community, culture, and long-term thinking.
