Welcome Educators

This lesson series has been created for students in Foundation to Year 2 to support learning about kelp forests, the Great Southern Reef, and the impacts of sea urchin expansion on these important underwater ecosystems.

The lessons are based on the documentary White Rock, produced by the Great Southern Reef Foundation, and have been adapted for young learners.

The activities start by exploring the Great Southern Reef, its kelp forests, and the incredible biodiversity they support. Students then explore the sea urchin problem and its effects on kelp forests, before finishing with ideas and actions for how we can help protect these habitats.

For educators teaching older year levels, the White Rock school resources are also available for Years 3 - 6 and Years 7 - 12.
